My Dog, Skip

THE SCHIPPERKE

He's not the first and he's not the only one either.  There was one Schipperke registered back in the 80's and I suppose, that one's deceased.  For awhile, "Skip" was the only one in the Philippines but a certain lawyer imported a pair from the West Coast.  The lawyer checked out Skip during one of the shows.  He was bragging about the pair he brought in, I was listening over his shoulders how his male Schipperke is definitely much nicer than "My Dog, Skip" to a PCCI staffer.  I interrupted with "So, when are you showing yours?"  Of course, he replied that the documentations haven't come in yet.  It wasn't the first time that I met this lawyer.  In the past, he came over to my house checking out my Bullies as I used to breed them.  Then too, he was bragging about his bulldogs.

I saw in the Sunday papers an ad:  "Rare breeds, AKC Import, Schipperke Pups"

From time to time, I check the club's Stud Book records and have never come across that particular pair.  Half a year passed, I see another ad.  The same lines.  And finally, the papers I suppose came.  After a week, the ad included "PCCI-reg".  So, I went to check out the puppies.

My interest in the Schipperke stemmed out from my fascination with the Belgian Shepherd Dogs, the Groenendael in particular.  The Schipperke being of Belgian in descent too.  It does look like a miniaturized Belgian Sheepdog without a tail.  Although I was discouraged right from the start breeding Schipperkes, I wouldn't really mind having a female to breed with "My Dog, Skip".  Discouraged, yes.  Why wouldn't I be?  Hearing how difficult it is to dock the tail correctly.  Plus, the problem with the breed's bites.  And I suppose, being a not so popular breed with a limited gene pool, it does have its quirks.

The Schipperke is however such a wonderful breed to have.  And yes, I am totally fascinated ...  captivated.

They are just so full of it.  Whatever "it" is, they are so full of "it".  Those living with them know what "it" means.  Little Tasmanian devil dogs.  Big dogs trapped in such a small body.  Of course, most little dog-owners would say the same for whatever little dog breeds they own.  Like take the Min-pin for example.  But really, there's a marked difference between a Schipperke and a Miniature Pinscher.  Believe you me, schips do get into a lot of trouble.  They are quite mischievous, cute but mischievous.  They're also clowns in more ways than one.  They're the kind that would best fit comic strips or sitcom series.  Lotsa antics.  It's never boring around them.  They're very quick, very alert ... intelligent.  Frisky, feisty ... zesty ...  one cool dog!  My Dog, Skip ...
