At Cob, we normally maintain
12 breeds. Eighty Percent are Show Dogs. Half are officially
retired from the ring having finished their Grand Championships or Hall
of Fame Show Dog status to give way to the younger ones that we bred
ourselves and kept, which should explain the number of dogs we
have. We show the retired dogs from time to time depending
on each dog's condition just for fun. It also keeps us on track
with our breeding program and yes, we test the judges' skills!
Just fifteen percent of the Cob Dogs are only meant just for loving and
definitely not up to par our breeding standards but hey! We love
them anyway and in equal proportions!
We may have 12 breeds but we do not breed them all. The Cob's
specialty at present are breeds belonging to the Herding Group.
Currently, our planned breeding program only include the Australian
Shepherd. We may have sometime in the future, puppies out of our
Hall of Fame pair of Shetland Sheepdog. We have indefinitely
postponed breeding of Belgian Groenendaels since we have
no intention of joining the Belgian Craze Bandwagon.
The Cob
Kennel Gang!
We
have a male Neapolitan Mastiff who guards the premises, a male
Rough-coated Collie who does obedience work and a male Labrador
Retriever trained as a narcotics sniffing dog that we use to keep our
main business drug-free. The
retired Goldens that we are taking care of we join at obedience
trials. Our Toy Poodles and Pekingeses are meant just
for loving, lots and lots. While the big dogs lie on our feet,
they keep our laps warm. These are the breeds that I grew up
and can't simply live without.
We
practice a very selective breeding program. We may have Chinese
Shar-Pei puppies from time to time. With the numerous genetic
defects of the breed, it has discouraged us from breeding from our
foundation stocks. Likewise, we also discourage those who carry
our lines. Most of our imports now suffer from the dreaded Swollen
Hock Syndrome or what is popularly known as the Shar-Pei Fever. It
is always heartbreakingly painful to lose a friend and if we can spare
you the angst, we honestly would. We dreadfully awake in angst as
days go by. It is of the same reason why we also got out of the
English Bulldog, the breed not being able to withstand the heat in
Manila.
As for Golden Retrievers, we leave everything up to Care Bear Goldens.
Most of the Cob Golden litters are co-bred with Care Bear and it
is seldom do we have puppies purely bred by Cob. The same goes with
the Pembroke Welsh Corgis that we have, we will be co-breeding with Care
Bear.
Presently, we only have one male Schipperke that we show and haven't
retired from the ring. We have plans of acquiring a bitch sometime
in the future if we find one that's best fit and suited to pioneer the
breeding of Schipperkes in the country.
