- The Peke, despite his petiteness, is courageous and bold.  His independence and confidence should imply combativeness rather than delicacy.  The dog is accustomed to being unchallenged and foremost in his master's eyes.

- For thousand of years, the Pekingese has been associated with the Chinese devotion to Buddhism.  the Buddha lion became of great importance, worthy of great homage; and as such, the Pekingese enjoyed similar lauds.  Bred by the chief Eunuch, the tiny "Lion Dogs" were kept in the sacred temple.  The Pekes preceded the emperor into the chamber of ceremonies and announced his arrival.  Chinese vengeance is relentless, and punishment for theft or defamation of any of the emperor's dogs was slow death by torture (which no Peke was ever to witness).

- He is ever alert and lively.  his coat requires extensive grooming.
